People quite like Balduinstein village with its beautiful Lahnpromenade and castle ruins. Leaving it behind will be rewarded with further things to explore. Fachingen is especially known for the mineral water of the same name. With a 26% market share, it is the most important source of medicinal water in Germany. The Grafenschloss Diez is situated high above the Lahn and the town itself invites visitors to stay. Viewpoints like the Katzenkopp and the Franzosenley can be seen on the way. The beautiful town of Limburg is the rewarding destination of this stage.

Author’s recommendation

The museum in the count's castle in Diez is worth a visit.

Destination

Limburg, railway station (main)

Turn-by-turn directions

From the center of Balduinstein, stairs and serpentines will take you up to the Katzenkopp viewing plateau. After leaving the village of Hausen and walking on a short passage across open fields, you will find yourself in a wonderfully light forest. Soon you will also reach the lookout point Franzosenley.

Passing impressive rocks and a shelter, this tour takes you towards Fachingen. But before your arrival, the Lahnwanderweg trail goes steeply downhill to the Fachinger Grundstollen. From here you will hike to Fachingen through fresh meadow ground. Everyone thinks of water when talking about Fachingen because "Fachinger" is a special healing water with a long tradition. Pass Fachingen railway station on your right and walk steeply uphill to a viewing pavilion. After walking along the edge of the forest, you will reach Diez.

On the way down to the town, you will have several chances to take a look at the Diezer Grafenschloss. Soon you will find yourself standing on the picturesque marketplace of the little town. After a long break, you will walk up to the Grafenschloss which is nowadays used as a youth hostel.

Leaving the forest, the way leads into a meadow way and finally guides you to the Schafsberg hill of Limburg through some fields. Across the hill the trail takes you to Limburg railway station which is the destination of this stage. In the old town, numerous restaurants await you to stop for a bite to eat. Those who can still manage the ascent will be able to enjoy the sight of the famous Limburger Dom.
