Today’s tour is characterized by ups and downs. First, we will leave the romantic town of Wetzlar and arrive at the Garbenheimer Warte through the idyllic park of the Ilmenau Anlage. From the Bismarckturm (unfortunately closed at the moment), we can look back and enjoy the view of the road ahead of us. Take a leisurely walk through the Lahnauen, visit the site of the Römerforum in the village of Waldgirmes and stroll through the beautiful forest to Rodheim-Bieber.

Author’s recommendation

Make sure to have enough time for an additional trip to the site of the Römerforum in Waldgirmes. The Lahninsel near Naunheim is a great place to take a break.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts in the beautiful Goethe and optics city of Wetzlar. Past the cathedral and the Lotte-Haus, follow the signs of the Lahnwanderweg trail. Through the floral splendor of the park of the Ilmenau Anlage, you will walk up to the Garbenheimer Warte tower whose medieval watchtower was converted into the Bismarckturm in 1901 (currently closed).

From the Bismarckturm, the route descends to the village of Garbenheim "Am Eselsberg" and then moves on to the Lahn meadows. You will accompany the Lahn for a while until you get to the glider airfield. When the weather is good, you can either watch the gliders or take a break on the Lahn island near Naunheim. Across the Lahnbrücke, we will continue our hike towards Waldgirmes. We recommend making a detour to the site of the Römerforum. If you fancy a little refreshment, the Haustädter Mühle is a good place to stop by. Afterwards, hikers will have to master the ascent to the Königstuhl where they can stroll through beautiful deciduous forest.

There is another opportunity to take a rest at the Frauenkreuz refuge. The cross, once erected to observe the peace of God, reminds people to be at peace with themselves and with creation. Shortly before the district of Rodheim we can have a look at two highlights of the following upstream stage: the castles of Vetzberg and Gleiberg. Passing the allotment gardens, you will reach today’s destination at Rodheim-Bieber with its fascinating church which is situated right in the center of the village.
