Starting from Lollar, the trail climbs up again into the mixed forest. Next you stroll down into the romantic Wißmarbachtal. People who could imagine themselves as ladies and lords of the castle will enjoy the detour to the ruins of Vetzberg and Gleiberg. According to an old legend, there is a secret passage between the two castles - but be aware, it is not marked with the Lahnwanderweg trail sign! Make sure to climb the towers of the castles Vetzberg and Gleiberg since both of them offer breathtaking panoramic views.

*** Current note: Due to renovation works the tower of the castle ruin Vetzberg is not climbable at the moment! ***

Alternative starting point in Gießen:

For a duration of 6.9 km, the access path from Gießen to the Lahnwanderweg trail leads across the Lahnauen to the turnoff in Krofdorf-Gleiberg. From there, the Lahnwanderweg trail continues for a further 5.4 km to the stage village of stage 9, Rodheim Bieber, or in a northerly direction for a further distance of 15.6 km to the stage village of Lollar where the LAWA stage 8 follows to the north.

Alternative destination for stage 9:

Alternatively, you can also end the stage in Gießen via the Gießen access path to the Lahnwanderweg trail, in which case it will provide a total distance of 21.5 km.

Author’s recommendation

Both castles offer refreshment stops. Opening hours: see Burg Gleiberg and Burg Vetzberg Castle. The Gail'sche Park in Rodheim-Bieber is also worth a visit.

Turn-by-turn directions

The stage starts in the small town of Lollar situated in the central Hessian region. Beginning at the railway station, follow the yellow access signposts, first through the town, then walk across the river Lahn and further on at comfortable paths up into the forest. Behind the Nabu bird shelter, keep right and after about 900 meters you will reach the signpost of the main trail. Follow the signpost straight ahead towards Krofdorf-Gleiberg.

Passing a reforestation area, the trail descends into the wild and romantic Wißmarbachtal. This romantic nature reserve is home to numerous rare plants. Between the fish ponds, the Lahnwanderweg trail branches off in a right-hand direction and now ascends before you will have a wonderful panoramic view towards Burg Gleiberg. The hiker will be awaited by another beautiful vantage point with an information board at the first houses of Launsbach.

Following the signposts, you now continue downhill through the forest. Walking on field paths you first go round the castle hill and next ascend to Burg Gleiberg. The castle consists of the upper castle and the lower castle (refreshment stop) where many of the old details have been restored. Being on the main tower (keep) of the upper castle, which is approximately 30 m high, you can enjoy a beautiful view over the Gießen basin along the river Lahn to the Vogelsberg, the Westerwald and the Taunus. The ruins of Burg Vetzberg can be seen as well from here. The Lahnwanderweg trail takes you along allotments to Krofdorf. Afterwards you walk across a country road and through a wide valley in the direction of Vetzberg. At "Alter Garten", we will cross the former border between Hessen-Darmstadt and Preußen. Making a detour to the castle is highly recommended since the lookout tower offers a wonderful view.

Follow the markings onwards through the fields. Passing the cemetery and the church, you finally reach the stage destination of Rodheim-Bieber. To round off the day, we suggest a visit to the Gail’sche Park.
