A comfortable day is waiting for hikers of this tour with wide views from the Altenberg. Once, there used to be eight mills in the romantic Salzbödetal. Today you can make a break at the Schönemühle café and the Schmelzmühle inn.

Here is the promise for a really easy-going hiking day. The first part of the tour, hikers will walk through the romantic Salzbödetal at the edge of the Krofdorf forest. Rilke described the Salzbödetal as a particularly attractive landscape as early as 1905. Next we will climb the Altenberg mountain, which overlooks the landscape with its 299 m and offers far-reaching views.

Author’s recommendation

Delicious gateaux and cakes are served at the Schönemühle in the Salzbödetal (You should ask about opening hours in advance).

Turn-by-turn directions

The stage starts in the rustic half-timbered village of Fronhausen with its choir tower church from the 12th century. To begin with, follow the access path signs of the Lahnwanderweg trail (red LW on yellow background). The trail will climb with a rather easy ascent and after about 2.5 km you will join the Lahnwanderweg trail on the hilltop again, which takes you from here towards Lollar. Keep to the left and walk leisurely through the forest downwards to the Salzbödetal. Within just one kilometer you will reach the small village of Schmelz.

The Schmelzmühle will be on your right. Here you can have a look at an old document (a license for using the mill) as well as the big mill wheel. The hospitable mill has been owned by the family since 1844. It is not only locals who appreciate the bread menu with farmer's breakfast, well-ripened hand cheese and a hearty homemade sausage. Afterwards hikers will walk through the meadows along the edge of the forest, through the idyllic Salzbödetal.

The Schönemühle at the entrance to Salzböden is the ideal place for a coffee break. Passing Salzböden and crossing the little brook that gives the village its name, the trail now ascends steeply to the Altenberg with an altitude of 299 m. At the top there is a wonderful place to rest and unwind. After approximately 600 comfortable meters you will reach the branch off to Lollar. Now please follow the access path signposts again.

In the Wehrholz you have the possibility to admire the bird shelter with its many different and decorative bird houses. Just before reaching Lollar as your stage destination, you finally cross the Lahn, which has meanwhile become a stately river. Take the Marburger Straße to the right to reach the centre of the village. Compared to the rural village of Fronhausen, Lollar appears quite urban. Time for a stroll, a cup of ice cream or a nice stop for a bite to eat.
