The steeply ascending route will take you through peaceful forests. You will enjoy the silence and the fresh air. In the idyllic upper Ilsetal you will walk along a wild and romantic brook. The Heilige Ilsequelle invites hikers to refill their bottles with its pure and healthy water. The next stop will be the destination of the tour: the wellspring of the Lahn. It rises from a small pond at the Lahnhof, at an altitude of more than 600 m in the mountains of the Rothaargebirge.

Author’s recommendation

Take a break at the "Heilige Ilsequelle". In the Middle Ages it was one of the most famous healing springs in Central Europe.

Destination

Source of river Lahn near Netphen (Forsthaus Lahnquelle, Lahnhof 1, 57250 Netphen)

Turn-by-turn directions

From the hiking portal in Feudingen, take the road "Zum Eichholz" up to the edge of the forest. A small rest area at the end of the village offers a beautiful view of the climatic health resort. Along the edge of the forest you can enjoy some beautiful views of the Lahntal. Through the forest the trail will then continue to climb steeply up to the Lahnhelle. Here you are at an altitude of almost 640 m. When following the markings, you will stroll down through the forest to the hikers’ car park near Heiligenborn.

For a short period of time the Lahnwanderweg trail runs parallel to a district road with little traffic here. The hamlet of Heiligenborn is a remote spot with with pretty half-timbered houses. After managing a short ascent, a small resting place will be reached. The Lahnwanderweg now joins the fairy tale trail “Kleiner Rothaar” (little Rothaar) for a while. The little Rothaar is a dwarf from the Rothaar mountains who cares about nature. Cross the Ilse creek and keep right afterwards. The trail leads through the wild and romantic upper Ilsetal now.

At the holy spring of the Ilse, you should take a break on the hiking wooden lounger after which you will have enough power for the upcoming ascents. You can use a wooden footbridge in order to leave the Ilsetal without getting wet. After the highest point of the hike (664 m) you will cross a district road. At the edge of the forest you can enjoy the view of the headwaters of the Lahn, Eder and Sieg. But the tour aspires to the Lahnquelle which is reached via a hikers’ car park and the tiny village of Lahnhof. The small spring pond will be a blaze of green in the evening sun. Two restaurants are inviting hikers to stop for a bite to eat. Here our hike on the Lahnwanderweg trail upstream will draw to a close and we will raise our glasses to the birthplace of the river Lahn!
