Use for a tour start:

The Gie&szlig access path leads in 7.2 km across the Lahn meadows to the Lahnwanderweg in Krofdorf-Gleiberg. From there you can choose to walk along the Lahnwanderweg in the classical direction or in the direction of the source, i.e. upstream. In the first case, you will reach the stage town of Rodheim Bieber (LAWA stage 9) in another 5.4 km. In the second case, you hike on the stage 9 upstream in another 15.6 km to the stage town of Lollar.

Use for a tour end:

Gießen is an interesting alternative destination for the LAWA stage 9 (from Lollar) which then offers 21.5 km total distance. If you hike LAWA stage 9 upstream, Rodheim-Bieber is the starting point.

Tour of the Mathematikum - hands-on mathematics

Gießen - mathematics at your fingertips

Even maths sourpusses have fun and are amazed. The strength of the Mathematikum is the presentation of scientific phenomena in the form of interactive experiments.

There is nothing that is not explained in a really vivid way!

Turn-by-turn directions

From the station, take the bridge at platforms 1 to 5 to the car park on the west side and take the lift down. Lahnstrasse is immediately on the right. The first signpost for the access road is at the passage between the bicycle stands and the multi-storey car park. This is the start of the 7.2 km long „Gießen Zuweg zum Lahnwanderweg“. Follow the road, after the Wieseckbrücke turn left towards the Lahn past the weir with boat lane. Then before the Lahn bridge turn right üover the ramp to the car park and to the crossroads. On Heuchelheimer Straße üover the bridge: on the left side of the crossroads cross Heuchelheimer Straße üand then left on the footpath üover the bridge to the end. At the height of the city cleaning department, take the stairs down and cross under the bridge. Pass the municipal cleaning site on the right. Pass the garden centres, cross a small bridge and turn right along the canal. First on a field path, then through an underpass into the industrial estate. Before the stream, turn right towards Heuchelheim. On the plateau to the Bismarck Tower. Continue in the direction of Wettenberg past „Oberen Hardthof“ and to the Lahnwanderweg. Follow this in the direction of Krofdorf-Gleiberg. Turn left at the car park of Gleiberg Castle, then towards Krofdorf. After the bridge, cross the L3047, where the Kelten-Römer-Pfad branches off, and the open field to the K169. Left on the footpath below the ruins of Vetzberg Castle, right uphill to the ruins. Again across the open field, then Rodheim-Bieber soon comes into view. Shortly along the cemetery and then left to the bus stop at the church. Voilà! (LAWA stages 9 or 10 or connect to the Celtic-Römer path).

What to see and do in Gießen

In the centre of Gießen is the Old Castle, a moated castle that was reconstructed after the destruction of the war in the 1970s. The core of the building and the five-storey thieves' tower date back to the 14th century. The Old Castle is also the headquarters of the Oberhessen Museum: Gießen is a museum city. For example, the Mathematikum or Liebigmuseum. In the centre of Gie&szlig it is also green and flowery. The Botanical Garden is the oldest university garden in Germany that is still on its original site. It was established in 1609 by the physician and botanist Ludwig Jungermann. Around 7,500 plant species from all over the world grow on an area of 3 hectares. City walkers appreciate this spacious and idyllic oasis in the middle of Giessen's city centre. Beautiful walking trails lead around the Silbersee lake to the north of the town, as well as around the two Heuchelheim leisure lakes to the south of Heuchelheim. From the Heuchelheim lakes you have a beautiful view üover the Lahnaue and across to the Gleiberger Land. Water sports enthusiasts and sun worshippers get their money's worth.
