Mountain Farmers Museum (Allgäuer Bergbauernmuseum e.V.)
This museum is particularly suitable for families with children. The open-air museum is located at an altitude of 1000 m and displays historic buildings as well as a variety of exhibitions related to animals and in particular, cows. Old and young guests can gain an insight into the life and work of the farmers in the alps. You can discover, for example, how the stomach of a cow looks from the inside, and understand how grass becomes milk. Also exhibited at the museum, a reconstructed dairyman's kitchen and a shepherd's room to get further insight into alpine farming. The young visitors can enjoy jumping in the hay and exploring the children's playground. In late summer it is worth following the festivities when cows return from the mountains to the valleys and to their owners ('Alpabtrieb' or 'Viehscheid').
Complete the day at the museum with a hearty snack and a fantastic panorama view of the Ammergauer and Appenzeller mountains. If you want to bring home a souvenir, you should visit the museum shop and the alpine dairy.
