Niedersonthofener See
Lake
· Allgäu
· 702 m
The “Niedersonthofener See“ lies in the district of Oberallgäu. It was formed during the retreat of the Iller glacier.
In summer the lake with its four free bathing places is very popular with locals as well as tourists, in winter it is suitable for ice skating if the ice is thick enough.
According to a well-known Allgäu legend, the “Bühlersee“ (“Alpsee“) is connected underground with the “Niedersonthofener See“.
Once, a farmer had driven out manure near the “Alpsee“ when he suddenly noticed a large fish on the shore, which struck with its tail fin. There the farmer sneaked quietly and cautiously with the dung hook and suddenly hit the fork in the back of the fish with all his might. But the fish was stronger than the man and escaped with the pitchfork in his back. Strangely enough, some time later one saw the same fish in the “Niedersonthofener See“, still with the pitchfork in its back. The two lakes must be connected after all.
