"Runder Turm"

"Runde Turm" (Round Tower)

The "Round Tower" is the symbol of the town of Zell (Mosel) and was the upper tower of the former town fortifications. This was demolished after the great fire in 1848 and some of the stones were used to rebuild the houses. The round tower and the square tower still were preserved and served as emergency housing. The tower is 14 metres high and has a diameter of six metres. Originally, as shown in old drawings, there was a tall pointed roof which was supported by four watchtowers. In 1690 the round tower was given an imperial dome which was similar to the parish church of St. Peter. Even today you can see the crenels from which the tower received its name of Powder Tower.
