Nugget Point
Coast
· South Island
Nugget Point is one of the most distinctive places on the Otago coast: a steep peninsula with a lighthouse, surrounded by a group of rocks (the nuggets). From the viewing platform at Nugget Point lighthouse, you experience a breathtaking view and can often see seals on the rocks directly below the lighthouse – don't forget to bring binoculars. With a little luck, you can also see black-vented shearwater (seabird), a booby breeding colony, sea lions, and even Hector dolphins. From Nugget Point is not far from Roaring Bay, where you can see yellow-eyed penguins (the best time is early in the morning or at sunset).

By road
Cape Nugget Point is located at the northern end of the Catlins and can be reached from the settlement of Kaka Point via an approximately 9 kilometer long coastal road, the Nugget Point Road. A 15-minute walk from the parking lot takes you to the lighthouse.Tip: To explore the south of New Zealand, you should not use Highway 1, but the Southern Scenic Route. This route takes longer, but the scenery is much more beautiful!
