Cape Reinga is the most northwestern point of the North Island of New Zealand. On the cape is the Cape Reinga Lighthouse. From its location, you can observe how two gigantic water masses meet: the Pacific Ocean in the east and the Tasman Sea in the west.
For Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, Cape Reinga is a special place: According to legend, the souls of the dead travel from here to Hawaiki, the mythical country of origin. The Māori name for the Cape, "Te Rerenga Wairua", means "leaping-off place of spirits".
