A history of more than 1000 years is connected with Gleiberg Castle. Probably around the year 1000, Count Friedrich I. of the House of Luxembourg built the first fortifications on the 308 m high basalt cone. In 1333 the castle passed to the Counts of Nassau, who extended the fortification by adding a lower castle in the second half of the 16th century. Of the upper castle, the accessible main tower (keep), remains of the palace walls and parts of the outer fortifications have been preserved, and various buildings of the lower castle. A rich collection on the history of the castle is kept in the castle tavern in the inner courtyard of the upper castle.

Gleiberg Castle can look back on an eventful history of more than a thousand years. Its strategic and political importance changed over the centuries, but one thing has remained the same:
It is one of the region's landmarks, visible from afar, a popular destination for excursions and gives the "Gleiberger Land" its name.

The castle consists of the older upper castle and a later built lower castle. The period of origin of the upper castle is dated to 950 AD. Property disputes and wars led to partial destruction. The lower castle was also built during the reconstruction.

From the viewing platform on the keep there is a beautiful view over the Giessen basin to the Vogelsberg, the Westerwald and the Taunus.

The large castle courtyard with its serviced terrace, the Knights' Hall, the Luxembourg Room and the newly designed restaurant rooms in the Nassau Building, the Albertus Cellar in the Albertus Building and the idyllic Albertus Garden invite you to linger.
