The bridge, which connects the village of Villmar with the Villmar railway station on the right side of the Lahn and the Unica quarry behind it, a natural monument, was built in 1894/95. Three bridge arches, each 21.5 metres long, rest on two piers which stand in the riverbed of the Lahn. A ferry already existed at this place before. Marble blocks from nearby quarries were used as building material. The side cladding is also made of local Lahn marble of various types.

The bridge was listed as a historical monument in 1985. In 1994/95 a fundamental renovation took place. In memory of the many displaced persons, especially from Bohemia, who found a new home in Villmar and the surrounding area after the end of the Second World War, the Villmar sculptor Walter Schmitt created a sculpture of the Bohemian patron saint - John of Nepomuk - from Wirbelau marble. This sculpture was handed over to the public as a bridge figure in the summer of 1996 with great sympathy from the population.
