A few of Europe’s most well-known pilgrim trails leads through the Oberallgäu. The Way of St. James mostly leads through the northern part of the region across hills and meadows, through forests or alongside water streams. In the idyllic Oberallgäu villages and municipalities religion and faith play a major part in the peoples’ lives and traditions. During a hiking tour numerous chapels and shrines are part of the path and invite pilgrims to rest and pray.

Pilgrimage on St. James’ footsteps

There are plenty of variations of the Way of St. James that lead through the entire continent. But all of them find their way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain’s northeast. St. James’ grave is the final destination of the famous and popular pilgrimage through Europe.

Kempten is the meeting point of the Way of St. James from Swabia and Munich from north and northeast. Moreover, the Way of St. James from Tyrol (Austria) also leads here. All of them merge into one pilgrim trail towards Lake Constance before continuing to Switzerland, France and eventually Spain.
